Federer misses out on Vienna final
Roger Federer came close to securing a great double for Swiss tennis on Saturday. But just hours after Martina Hingis secured her place in the Kloten final, Federer was unable to squeeze past Britain's Tim Henman in the Vienna semi-finals.
Having enjoyed wins over world number four Magnus Norman and former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek earlier this week, the teenager from Basel appeared to be on course for only the second ATP final of his career.
But after blitzing sixth-seeded Henman 6-2 in the first set, Federer was unlucky to lose the second set on a tie-break. The Swiss number one appeared to have been stunned by the British player’s fightback and lost the first three games of the deciding set.
A mini-revival by Federer ensured that the match lost none of its interest, but having taken the lead Henman was able to hold on for a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory.
Federer’s defeat leaves the Swiss youngster still looking for his first singles title on the ATP tour. In February he reached the final of the Marseille tournament, only to lose out to fellow Swiss player Marc Rosset.
