Football clubs land difficult European ties

FC Zurich will face German giant Bayern Munich in the qualifying round for the Champions League football competition.

The draw for European football’s most prestigious club tournament took place at Uefa headquarters in Nyon on Friday.

Zurich, runners-up in the Swiss championship, will travel to Munich on August 16 or 17. The return match is scheduled a week later.

Swiss champions Basel have automatically qualified for the group stages of the lucrative competition.

In the play-offs for the Europa League competition, Young Boys of Bern face last year’s finalists Braga of Portugal. Cup winners Sion drew one of Scotland’s big clubs, Celtic, while Thun will take on English side Stoke City.

The ties are scheduled for August 18 and August 25.
