Former officer Nyffenegger sentenced to four months

A former Swiss army colonel accused of breaching military secrecy, Friedrich Nyffenegger, has been sentenced to four months imprisonment.

A military appeals court in Zurich handed down the sentence on Wednesday. It also upheld an earlier decision that Nyffenegger was guilty of disobeying military orders

Nyffenegger’s former superior, ex-brigadier Paul Meyer, was also found guilty of disobeying military orders and fined SFr2,000. He was found not guilty of breaching military secrecy.

Three other defendants were found not guilty on both counts.

In 1998, Nyffenegger was convicted of gross negligence in the handling of a CD-rom which contained secret plans for military mobilisation. He received a 15-month suspended prison sentence.
