Grasshoppers narrow the gap on Lugano

Grasshoppers scored a last minute winner against Lugano Keystone

Zurich Grasshoppers came from behind to second-placed Lugano 2-1 on Saturday - putting them just one point behind them in the table.

After a goalless first half, the visitors took the lead in the 63rd minute through forward, Joël Magnin. But just 10 minutes later Grasshoppers’ Uruguayan midfielder, Richard Nunez levelled the scores.

And to the delight of the home fans, Ricardo Cabanas scored in the dying moments of the game to give Grasshoppers the win.

In Sunday’s other match, Sion and Zurich played out a 1-1 draw.

St Gallen gatecrash Basel party

St Gallen beat football league winners, FC Basel, 2-1 on Saturday, but failed to dampen the team’s homecoming party on Saturday.

The match was played amid euphoric chanting by Basel supporters in the sold-out St Jacob’s stadium, packed with 33,433 spectators. Many of them had came solely to watch their team being handed the league trophy.

Basel’s fatigue after their winning season was in evidence during the match and St Gallen seized their chance to shine, opening the match with a winning goal by Alex Tachie-Mensah in the sixth minute.

Basel’s Australian forward, Scott Chipperfield managed to rally round to score the equaliser in the first half, but his team mates did not show the same focus. There were strong performances by St Gallen, notably by their Romanian forward, Terinio Ionel Gane, who scored his 15th goal of the season to hand the visitors the win.

Young Boys tie

There was nothing to celebrate over in Geneva on Saturday, with Servette and Young Boys drawing 0-0.

Servette still stand a good chance of qualifying for the UEFA Cup, with a comfortable four point cushion over the Bern team.
