Martina Hingis has been defeated by the American Venus Williams in the semi-finals of the Key Biscayne tennis tournament. Hingis, currently the world's top player, was unable to maintain her resistance in the second set, and finally lost 6-3,7-6.

Williams took a strong 4-0 lead early in the first set, with Hingis letting a game point slip away in each of the first three games. The second set was more balanced, with both players obtaining four games.

Hingis then briefly held a set point at 6-5 in the tiebreaker, before losing 7-6.

Up until now, Hingis was leading Williams 10-7 after 17 matches. By beating Hingis, Williams is qualified for the finals of the Miami tournament, where she will either face her American compatriot Jennifer Capriati, or the Russian Elena Dementiva, on Saturday.

Serena Williams is currently ranked number three, while Capriati and Dementiva are respectively fourth and seventh.
