Hingis celebrated her fourth Tokyo title on Sunday Keystone

Martina Hingis has seen her strong start to the season rewarded in the latest international tennis rankings. Following her weekend win in Tokyo the Swiss star is now up to third in the world.

Hingis’s hard-fought victory over Monica Seles in Sunday’s Tokyo final helped her climb above America’s Lindsay Davenport, who has now slipped down two places to fourth.

Two other Americans are ahead of Hingis with Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati holding on to number one spot and Venus Williams climbing into second place.

Victory in the $1.22 million Tokyo tournament saw Hingis bounce back impressively from her Australian Open disappointment. During an impressive start to the new season, the 21-year-old has now won twice (in Sydney and Tokyo) as well as reaching the Grand Slam final.

No change for Federer

Switzerland’s Roger Federer remains in 13th place in the men’s ATP rankings despite failing to reclaim his Milan Indoors title at the weekend. Federer was outgunned by the unseeded Italian, Davide Sanguinetti, in three sets.
