Hingis wins Montreal WTA tournament

Switzerland's Martina Hingis has a good reason to celebrate after winning the du Maurier tournament on Sunday Keystone

The Swiss world number one seed, Martina Hingis, won du Maurier tennis Open in Montreal on Sunday by beating the American, Serena Williams. It is Hingis's 30th title in her career and her fourth this year.

Hingis won the third set 3-0 after Williams decided to abandon the game with injury problems. However, she lost the first set 0-6 but was able to win the second 6-3.

The American world number four seed had strained her left foot in the second set and was unable to carry on for much longer.

Williams’s injury problems turned the match around for Hingis: before the second set she was completely at the mercy of a strong opponent with powerful strokes. Only halfway through the second set Hingis started deciding the match in her favour.
