Journalist assassination condemned

The Swiss foreign ministry has condemned the assassination of a radio journalist in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Didace Namujimbo of Radio Okapi, a station supported by Switzerland’s Hirondelle Foundation, was shot dead last Thursday close to his home in Bukavu in eastern Congo.

Namujimbo was the second journalist from Radio Okapi to have been killed within the past year.

In a statement on Monday, the Swiss foreign ministry said it was “deeply concerned about these assaults on the freedom of the press in the region”.

According to the Swiss authorities, Namujimbo had intensively researched the events leading to the assassination of his colleague and the widespread problem of rape.

“In an unequal battle, violence has won over humanity,” the foreign ministry said, demanding “full explanations of both assassinations”.
