Manta hangs up his racket
Swiss tennis player Lorenzo Manta has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 27.
The former Davis Cup team member said he had been forced to call it a day because of serious wear to his right elbow.
“I have to stop because the injury is restricting my arm movement,” said Manta. “I’ve tried treatment but it didn’t do any good.”
A doubles specialist, Manta achieved a world record in the Davis Cup. Partnered by Marc Rosset and then Roger Federer, he won nine successive doubles matches in the international competition between September 1997 and April 2001.
Manta’s greatest moment on the singles circuit came at the 1999 Wimbledon tournament when he beat former champion Richard Krajicek in five sets to book a place in the fourth round of the Grand Slam event.
With Switzerland’s Australian Davis Cup coach Peter Carter still having to wait for a residency permit before he can captain his side on court, Manta was asked by the Swiss association if he would be interested in fulfilling that interim role.
On Tuesday, though, Manta said the two sides had failed to agree financial terms.
