More success for Casanova

Following her amazing run at Wimbledon, Swiss teenager Myriam Casanova got back to winning ways on Monday.

The 17-year-old from eastern Switzerland proved that her progress to the third round of the Grand Slam event was no fluke by beating Spanish third seed Christina Torrens Valero (WTA 41) at the latest WTA tournament in Brussels.

Monday’s 7-6, 6-2 win was Casanova’s third in two weeks against a player ranked in the world’s top 60.

And having completed her Wimbledon run after slogging her way through the tournament’s qualifying round, Casanova can now take pride in her own world ranking.

Ranked 180th before Wimbledon, the young Swiss leapt up 61 places to 119th in the latest standings, published on Monday.

If she can continue her current vein of form, Casanova would likely earn herself a place in September’s US Open – without having to take the qualifying route.

In the shorter term, the teenager’s path towards another third round appearance looks reasonably smooth. Having upset one Spaniard on Monday, Casanova will herself be the favourite when she comes up against Spanish qualifier Mariam Ramon Climent (WTA 346) in the second round in Brussels.
