Putzer wins tricky Super-G

Switzerland's Sylviane Berthod speeds down the St Moritz course to finish 10th Keystone

Italy's Karen Putzer upset the favourites and won the women's World Cup Super-G in the Swiss resort of St Moritz.

Putzer collected her second World Cup victory after clocking a time of one minute, 26.18 seconds. She led an Italian celebration with team mate Daniela Ceccarelli finishing second, the best result of her career.

Austrian Stefanie Schuster and American Kirsten Clark shared third place.

Sylviane Berthod was the best placed Swiss. She came in 10th with a time of 1:28.04.

Difficult course

“It’s true it was a technically demanding course,” said Putzer, whose other World Cup win came in the same event here last year. “It was a really difficult course. But my coach told me before the race which were the difficult gates so I knew what to expect.”

The Engiadina course claimed six victims among the first 10 skiers.

“I was a little bit surprised when I heard that so many of the good racers had gone out,” Ceccarelli said. “And I wasn’t aware I’d gone so fast.”

“It wasn’t an ideal course setting,” said local favourite Corinne Rey Bellet. “There was very bad light at first so the first four or five girls had very poor visibility.”

The women’s World Cup resumes on Friday in Lienz, Austria, which will host a giant slalom and a slalom.

Overall standings

Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria is leading the overall standings in the women’s Alpine skiing World Cup after Saturday’s Super-G. Italy’s Isolde Kostner lies in second place while Switzerland’s Sonja Nef is currently sharing third spot with Hilde Gerg of Germany.

After her victory in Friday’s downhill race in St Moritz, Berthod is in 6th position. Her compatriot, Corinne Rey-Bellet is in 12th spot.
