Santa Claus delivers twice

The Swiss Red Cross has received around 73,000 packages for its 15th “2 x Christmas” campaign to benefit the needy and social institutions.

The result is an improvement on the previous year’s figures and includes approximately 2,000 virtual gifts that donors could purchase online.

The Red Cross said on Friday that people could buy virtual packages until the end of January. When the online campaign ends, the organisation will distribute the packages in Belarus, Moldova, Bosnia-Herzegovina and needy people in Switzerland.

The campaign, which was first launched in 1997, is supported by Swiss Post and the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, swissinfo’s parent company. An estimated 870,000 packages have been distributed over the years.

The items most in demand have been food, toiletries, items for small children, shoes and school material.
