Swiss downhill success at Bormio

Silvan Zurbriggen has come second in the men’s downhill world champion skiing event in Bormio, only eight hundredths of a second behind the winner.

Michael Walchhofer of Austria finished Wednesday’s descent in the Italian resort in 1:59:66, his third victory of the season.

The two were the only ones to come in in under two minutes. Another Swiss, Patrick Küng, was fourth, at 2:00:26.

Zurbriggen, a slalom specialist, was the surprise downhill winner at Val Gardena earlier this month.

The result leaves him just one point ahead of Walchhofer at the top of the overall World Cup standings for the season so far after 11 out of 37 events.

At the end of last season Zurbriggen was eighth in the overall rankings, and Walchhofer tenth. The Grand Crystal Globe awarded to the best overall skier was won by another Swiss, Carlo Janka.
