Tour de France: Jalabert slips into yellow jersey for fifth stage
The former world number one, Frenchman, Laurent Jalabert, is slipping into the leader's yellow jersey for the fifth stage of the Tour de France, after his Once team won the team time trial on Tuesday.
Once finished the 70 kilometre race from Nantes to Saint Nazaire, in just over one hour, 25 minutes. The defending champion, the American, Lance Armstrong, led his US Postal team into second place 46 seconds behind, followed by Jan Ulrich’s Deutsche Telekom team. The Banesto team, led by Switzerland’s Alex Zülle came in fifth.
It means Zülle enters the 202 kilometre fifth stage from Vannes to Vitré, 56th in the overall standings, down from sixth place. However, he should not find it too difficult to climb back up the standings after Wednesday’s race.
The time trial itself was taken as an opportunity for the tour favourites to relax a little before the gruelling Pyrenees mountain stages which loom at the beginning of next week.
