Yverdon through to first ever Swiss Cup semi-final
Yverdon have booked a potentially explosive semi-final clash against close rivals Lausanne, after seeing off Thun in a nail-biting Swiss Cup tie.
Victory over the second division side, 4-2 on penalties, means that Yverdon are through to the last four of the cup for the first time in the club’s history.
The visiting team’s hopes of an easy passage through to the semis were shattered as early as the ninth minute when Thun stole a shock lead through an own goal by the Yverdon defender Delay.
But parity was restored just 12 minutes later when Friedli scored with a header from a Kehrli centre. Both sides squandered good chances to win the match, and the score remained 1-1 after extra time.
Yverdon’s goalkeeper, Delay, then saved two spot kicks during the penalty shoot-out, before their young Swiss international, Jenny, put away the decisive goal.
In the other semi-final, Servette will take on St Gallen.
