A record 37 people won seven-figure – or more – sums in the Swiss national lottery in 2009, the cooperative Swissslos announced on Thursday.
The largest win was SFr19.1 million ($18.45 million), breaking a record set in 1990, when someone won SFr18.2 million.
In one week in April no fewer than four people chose the six winning numbers, bringing them more than a million francs.
Swiss gamblers were not so lucky with the Euro Millions lottery, which is played in a total of ten countries. No one in Switzerland was among the major winners, but three did win at least one million.
A Swisslos spokesman said that the economic crisis had had practically no impact on gambling.
Swisslos is a cooperative whose members are the German-speaking cantons and Ticino. It runs Swiss Lotto and Euro Millions, where players have to chose winning numbers, as well as a number of instant lotteries and sporting bets.
All profits go to good causes in various fields, including national sports teams.
