Lugano hot on Basel's heels

Lugano (in white) defend the goal while St Gallen's Jan Berger takes a freekick

With a 1-0 win against St Gallen, Lugano have pushed themselves up to second position in the league table, five points behind the leader, Basel.

In front of a 2,500-strong home crowd, Rossi scored the only goal of the match in the 24th minute, but team mate Magnin narrowly missed a second Lugano goal, when his header was deflected off the post in the 58th minute.

St Gallen missed their only goal chance when Jairo's free kick missed the back of the net.

After Saturday's match St Gallen slipped one place down the league table to sixth.

Servette vs Sion

In other football action Servette went head-to-head with Sion pulling off a 4-1 win.

In what was a French-speaking showdown Frei was very much the Servette star scoring all four of their goals.

The game took a long time to get going with the fans having to wait until the 63rd minute for any whiff of a goal. But in the last half hour the match turned into a scoring frenzy.

Frei added to his first goal with another seven minutes later. Sion couldn't afford to rest on their laurels and in the 79th minute Marazzi lobbed one into the back of the net.

Servette were quick to respond with Frei scoring his third goal from a penalty seven minutes before the final whistle. As a parting shot Frei scored another goal just before full-time, making the final score 4-1.

Servette's decisive win saw them jump two places up the league table to fourth with Sion left languishing at the bottom.
