Lugano to host world mountain bike championships

The Swiss town of Lugano has won the right to host the 2003 world mountain bike championships beating off competition from the French resort of Les Gets.

The successful Ticinese bid was headed by former professional rider Rocco Cattaneo who will now preside over the championship’s organising committee.

It will be the second time in seven years that a major cycling event has come to Lugano. In 1996 the town hosted the world road race championships.
