McMahon launches comeback at Zurich triathlon event

McMahon came second after an eleven-month break Keystone

The Swiss triathlete, Brigitte McMahon, reached second place in the Credit Suisse triathlon event in Zurich on Saturday, but was beaten by six seconds by the world junior champion, Nicola Spirig.

The race marks McMahon’s return to professional sport after giving birth to her second child only 11 weeks ago.

The triathlon Olympic winner lead the way in the 800 metres swimming event and the 6km bike ride, but was overtaken in the final 2km race by Spirig.

In an interview with swissinfo, McMahon said she felt “very contented” at her result, particularly in view of her eleven-month break.

“It’s very exciting to be back, and to be racing against Swiss opponents again,” she said. “It makes me look forward to the races ahead.”

McMahon’s forthcoming events include the triathlon championships in Nyon next weekend, and the World Cup championships in Lausanne on August 25.

In terms of training, McMahon said she still needed to step up the intensity of her schedule, and work on her speed training.

For Spirig, the race is proof of her continuing development. The 19-year old is second in the Swiss triathlete rankings.
