Nef eighth in Sestrières slalom

Croatian teenager Janica Kostelic heads for her fourth slalom victory Keystone

Switzerland's Sonja Nef had to settle for eighth place in the women's slalom world cup race in Sestrières on Wednesday. The 28-year-old Appenzeller was almost a second and a half behind the winner, Janica Kostelic of Croatia.

The Croatian teenager has made a flawless start to the new skiing season. Her win in the Italian resort was her fourth in four races.

Second place went to Norway’s Trine Bakke, while Kristina Koznick of the United States came in third.

Switzerland’s Marlies Oester finished eight places behind Nef, in sixteenth position, to register her first points of the season.

Currently 12th in the slalom rankings, Nef’s best hopes of a world cup title lie in the giant slalom. After winning the Sestrières giant slalom race on Tuesday, Nef is now second in the discipline, just four points behind Sweden’s Anja Paerson.
