Olympic cyclists and triathletes disappoint

Keystone

Swiss track cyclists Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli have finished a disappointing 11th in the men's madison event at the Beijing Olympics.

The Swiss competitors in the men’s triathlon also failed to shine, but Nathalie Brugger saved a bit of national honour by coming sixth in the women’s one person dinghy race on Tuesday.

Risi/Marvulli, who had taken silver in Athens four years ago, clearly underperformed and did not get near a medal place. Gold went to Argentina, while Spain claimed silver ahead of Russia, which won bronze.

Sven Riederer, bronze medallist in Athens, kept the pace in the men’s triathlon during the swimming and cycling, but fell behind in the final running event and finished 23rd.

His compatriots Olivier Marceau came 19th while Reto Hug finished the competition in 29th. Jan Frodeno of Germany clinched gold ahead of Canada’s Simon Whitfield and Bevan Docherty of New Zealand.

For her part Brugger came fifth in the final of the Laser Radiant sailing event, earning sixth place overall.
