Play resumes at Roland Garros

Switzerland's top tennis players are in action again at the French Open in Paris, following Tuesday's washout.

Marc Rosset is through to the second round after a 7-5, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Byron Black of Zimbabwe.

In women’s play, Miroslava Vavrinec, lost 4-6, 6-7 against Rosanna de los Rios of Paraguay.

Georg Bastl, the other Swiss player whose match was cancelled by heavy rain on Tuesday, is facing Russia’s Marat Safin.

Four other Swiss players are already through to the second round. The world number one, Martina Hingis defeated Belgium’s Sabine Appelmans, 6-0, 6-4, on Monday.

And there was a surprise victory for Emmanuelle Gagliardi when she defeated her compatriot and Federation Cup team-mate, Patty Schnyder, 6-3, 6-4.

In the men’s game, Michel Kratochvil won his first match in a Grand Slam tournament beating the US player, Justin Gimelstob.

Roger Federer is also through to the second round after defeating Australia’s Wayne Arthurs.
