Record haul at student games

With two days to go until the end of the world student games in Beijing, Switzerland are already boasting a record medal haul.

On Wednesday the Swiss team won another four bronze medals, taking their overall tally to one silver and five bronzes.

Sabine Fischer (1,500 metres), Christian Belz (3,000 metre steeplechase), tennis player Matthieu Amgwerd and the men’s épée team were the latest Swiss competitors to step onto the podium.

Earlier in the games, Remo Lütolf swam his way to a silver medal in the 50 metres breaststroke while sprinter Mireille Donders took bronze in the women’s 100 metres.

Switzerland’s previous best medal haul at the student games came two years ago in Majorca, where the newly-crowned 800 metres world champion André Bucher won a silver medal with fellow runner Marcel Schelbert and fencer Marcel Fischer both clinching bronzes.

No Swiss athlete has yet won a gold at the games.
