Swiss ice hockey star Michel Riesen has joined NHL team the St Louis Blues as part of a trade deal with his former club the Edmonton Oilers.

The 22-year-old right wing from Oberbalm in canton Bern spent most of last season playing for Edmonton’s AHL farm team, the Hamilton Bulldogs. During that time he was the side’s fourth top scorer, grabbing 26 goals and 28 assists.

Riesen was one of three Swiss players who made debuts in the NHL last season, but his record of one assist in 12 games was not sufficient to ensure a regular place.

It is not yet clear whether Riesen will start the new season playing in the NHL with the Blues or if he will again be farmed out.

As part of the same deal, the Blues have acquired first team center Doug Weight from the Oilers. Three players, including German forward Jochen Hecht, are going in the other direction.
