Road and rail hampered by heavy snowfall

Wintry weather has forced the closure of several railway lines and roads across the Swiss Alps.

The main north-south line was temporarily shut on Wednesday because of a danger of avalanches, according to the Federal Railways.

Trains to and from northern Italy were rerouted through western Switzerland, causing considerable delays.

Other mountain lines in central and eastern Switzerland as well as roads were also interrupted.

Weather experts said up to 70cm of snow had fallen in the Alps since Tuesday, followed by freezing temperatures across much of the country.
