Russian challenge in Davis Cup

Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov will give Swiss players a hard time during the Davis Cup Keystone Archive

Switzerland has been drawn against Russia in the first round of the 2002 Davis Cup tennis tournament in February.

The Swiss face a tough challenge against the fifth-seeded Russian team, which boasts the two top-ten Russian players Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin.

A 1990 encounter between the Soviet Union and Switzerland ended in a 3-2 victory for the Swiss team.

The matches are due to take place from February 8-10 next year.

The first round draw for the World Group of the 2002 Davis Cup is as follows (numbers denote seedings):

Argentina v 1-Australia
2-France v Netherlands
3-Spain v Morocco
Britain v 4-Sweden
5-Russia v Switzerland
6-U.S. v Slovakia
Czech Republic v 7-Brazil
Croatia v 8-Germany
