Swiss tennis player Patty Schnyder has announced she is retiring with immediate effect, five days after losing in the first round of the French Open.

At an emotional news conference on the sidelines of the tennis competition on Satuday, the 32-year-old Schnyder said she had made the decision because she wanted to pursue other interests.
The current world number 55 has played in 59 Grand Slam tournaments, including 52 in a row from 1997-2009, and her best showing was making the semifinals at the 2004 Australian Open.
She also won 11 singles titles in her career, but had only three wins in 12 matches this season.
Schnyder, who was born in Basel, the same town as Swiss tennis star and world number three Roger Federer, has notched up a 555-370 career record. She is considered the second-best Swiss female player after Martina Hingis.
