Cabinet considers climate law

The government is considering drawing up specific climate legislation, one of 30 measures proposed in its sustainable development strategy for the next four years.

It approved the plan on Tuesday, which includes a new law to ensure that Switzerland is able to fulfil its obligations under international treaties it has signed, in particular those concerning greenhouse gases.

The legislation would be added to the country’s climate protection arsenal, which includes a CO2 law and the Kyoto Protocol targets for emissions.

The government said that a new law would help promote more sustainable lifestyles and help further reduce greenhouse gases resulting from the use of fossil fuels and other sources of energy.
