Sion are no longer languishing at the bottom of Switzerland's premier football league table after they won Wednesday evening's match against Grasshoppers Zurich.

The team from the Valais won the match at Tourbillion 2-0, putting paid to Grasshoppers’ hopes of going to the top of the division.

Playing in front of a home crowd, Sion’s Julien Poueys scored the first goal in the eighth minute, while M’Futi Mobulu scored the second and final goal of the evening in the 44th minute.

Sion’s first win of the championship round sees them climb off the bottom of the table at the expense of Basel, who are due to play Lausanne on Thursday.

In Swiss Cup action, Young Boys beat Wangen 6-1, ensuring their place in the quarter-finals. Young Boys have been bidding for promotion to the top division while Wangen are fighting off relegation to the third division.

Wednesday’s other planned cup match, between Schaffhausen and Winterthur, was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
