Slalom races leave Swiss women in the cold
The Swiss women ski team has been unable to muster a medal in the slalom races on Saturday at the World Championships in Val d'Isère, France.
German Maria Riesch won the event with a combined time of one minute, 51.80 seconds, all but sealing the all-around slalom champion title. Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic took silver, 0.77 seconds behind. Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen settled for third place, 1.09 seconds slower than Riesch.
Among the Swiss racers, 19-year-old Denise Feierabend ended in sixth place. It was the best showing for the women’s team in the event.
Aline Bonjour took tenth place at 2.04 seconds behind the winner. Rabea Grand ended in 14th place (+2.64). Sandra Gini, normally the women’s strongest slalom specialist, took a disappointing 16th place, three seconds behind Riesch.
Lindsey Vonn of the United States held silver after the opening leg but crashed on her second run. She fell on the thumb she cut a few days ago on a champagne bottle while celebrating an earlier victory. She did not appear to have suffered further injury.
The World Ski Championships unfold every two years. The competition closes on Sunday.
