St Gallen fail in bid for Frei

Frei's transfer prayers have so far gone unanswered Keystone

The Swiss football champions St Gallen have failed to reach an agreement with Lucerne over the planned transfer of young striker Alex Frei.

St Gallen had hoped to sign the Swiss Under-21 international as a replacement for their top scorer Charles Amoah, who last week completed a move to Austrian champions Sturm Graz.

Lucerne are reported to have been offered SFr 700,000 for the 21-year-old Frei, but refused to budge from their original demand of more than a million francs and a share of any subsequent transfer fee.

With the central Swiss club also turning down offers from Servette and Lugano, Frei now looks set to stay at Lucerne for the club’s battle against relegation.

Lucerne are themselves on the hunt for a strike partner to join Frei following the depature of Blaise N’Kufo to Mainz. Recent talks with Delemont’s Bulgarian forward Alexander Alexandrov ended without agreement.
