St Gallen gatecrash Basel party

Basel star Massimo Ceccaroni is cheered by the home crowd Keystone

St Gallen succeeded in beating football league winners, FC Basel, but failed to dampen the team's homecoming party on Saturday.

The match was played amid euphoric chanting by Basel supporters in the sold-out St Jacob’s stadium, packed out with 33,433 spectators, many of whom came solely to watch their team being handed the league trophy.

Basel’s fatigue after their winning season was in evidence during the match and their sixth-ranked opponents seized their chance to shine, opening the match with a winning goal by Alex Tachie-Mensah in the sixth minute.

Basel’s Chipperfield managed to rally round to score the equaliser in the first half, but his team mates did not show the same focus. There were strong performances by St Gallen, notably by Gane, who scored his fifteenth goal of the season.

Gane’s goal sealed St Gallen’s 2-1 win.

Young Boys tie

There was nothing to celebrate over in Geneva on Saturday, with Servette and Young Boys drawing 0-0.

Servette still stand a good chance of qualifying for the UEFA Cup, with a comfortable four points ahead of the Bern team.
