St Gallen move to fill Amoah void

St Gallen football club seem finally to have put an end to their striker shortage, after signing Yugoslavian forward Ivan Stefanovic from Obilic Belgrade.

Switzerland’s defending football champions will be hoping that the 26-year-old player can fill the gap left by last season’s league top-scorer Charles Amoah.

The Ghanaian striker, who played a major role in helping St Gallen win their first league title in almost 100 years, left the club at the end of the winter qualifying round to join Austria’s Sturm Graz.

Stefanovic has received his work permit but will not be able to play in Saturday’s match against league leaders Lugano as he is still waiting to be registered by the Swiss football association.

Stefanovic’s contract runs until June 2004.

St Gallen are hoping to sign another striker before the end of next week after opening talks with the Brazilian 24-year-old Alexandre Jefferson Batista.
