St Gallen take over top spot

Nixon scores his second and St Gallen's third goal in their 3-2 victory over Lugano Keystone

St Gallen have moved to the top of the Swiss football first division after beating their nearest rivals Lugano 3-2 in a thrilling match on Saturday.

St Gallen, who were last year’s champions, took the lead in the 19th minute through Nixon, but Lugano equalised before half-time with a goal by Rossi.

The eastern Swiss side took the lead again just after the break through Guido and seemed to have the match wrapped up when Nixon scored his second of the match in the 74th minute.

However, Lugano’s latest signing, Swiss international Türkyilmaz gave them hope of salvaging a point four minutes from time, but St Gallen held on for a deserved victory.

St Gallen are now one point ahead of Lugano at the top of the league, with Grasshoopers Zurich, who were not in action this weekend, a further point behind but with a game in hand.

Fourth-placed Servette Geneva had the opportunity to move level with St Gallen on Sunday. But they were beaten 1-0 by FC Zurich with the lone goal being scored by Akale 10 minutes from time.
