Keystone

Sweden rallied back from a 5-2 deficit to defeat the United States 6-5 in overtime on Wednesday evening at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Switzerland.

Trailing 5-2 at the 48:20 mark, Sweden went on a tear, beginning their comeback with a goal by Magnus Johansson.

Niklas Persson beat US goalie Robert Esche at 52:25 to bring the score to 5-4 for the world’s fourth-ranked team. Mattias Weinhandl followed with a goal at 56:19.

Kristian Huselius skated into the US end in overtime after American Patrick O’Sullivan turned over the puck at the Swedish blue line for the winner.

Jonas Gustavsson was the third Swedish goalie to play in as many games.

Sweden’s win places them in a match-up against Russia on Thursday evening in Bern. The United States play France on Friday.

Strong Finnish

Also on Wednesday evening, third-ranked Finland defeated fifth-ranked Czech Republic in Zurich for their third straight win at the tournament.

The Finns, like the Swedes, came back from a game in which they were trailing. Behind 3-1 in the second period, Finland began to claw back with a goal from Jakub Stepanek at 23:52 into the game.

Finland capitalised on a 5-on-3 power play with 1:32 remaining in the second period to tie the game.

Niklas Hagman scored in the last ten seconds of the second period to put Finland up for good.

The win leaves Finland in top spot in Group D. They play Slovakia on Friday. The Czech Republic play Canada on Thursday evening in Zurich.
