Swiss “winter” charity turns 75

The Swiss charitable organisation Winterhilfe is 75 years old this year. Founded in 1936, Winterhilfe, (“winter aid” in German), is now active all year round.

Its services are still appreciated today, said its president at a media conference on Monday. Winterhilfe helps about 17,000 people each year – including 6,000 children.

It provides emergency cash, clothing, food and school supplies to some of the poorest people living in Switzerland. In 2009/2010, the assistance added up to SFr2.5 million ($3 million). Winterhilfe is funded completely through donations.

“Today we particularly need to make up for shortfalls that arise when cantons have to save money,” said Winterhilfe President Monika Weber at the media conference in Bern.
