Swiss avoid Wimbledon big guns

The first-round draw for this year's Wimbledon tennis championships has thrown up few surprises for the competing Swiss players.

Switzerland’s tennis star, Roger Federer, is seeded seventh in the tournament and has been drawn against an as yet unknown player from the qualifying round.

Michel Kratochvil will play Russia’s Nikolai Davidenko, while Marc Rosset has been drawn against the Argentinian player, José Acasuso.

George Bastl, meanwhile, will have to fight it out in the qualifying round if he is to progress through to the tournament proper.

In the women’s draw, Patty Schnyder – seeded 17th at this year’s Wimbledon – will face a winner from the qualifying round, while rising Swiss star, Marie-Gaiané Mikaelian, will square off against Canada’s Maureen Drake in the first round.

Emmanuelle Gagliardi has been drawn against the British player, Hannah Collin.

The tournament begins on June 24.
