On Sunday, 19 seed Stanislas Wawrinka outclassed American Andy Roddick in three straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, at the Australian Open. He’ll now meet defending champion and number two seed Roger Federer.
Wawrinka broke Roddick in the first set for a 5-3 lead and never looked back.
Roddick, the number eight seed, was the last American in either the men’s or women’s singles draw this year.
Federer beat Tommy Robredo in four sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to make it to the quarterfinals. It will be the 27th consecutive time he’s reached the final eight of a grand slam, equalling Jimmy Connors’ record.
Wawrinka and Federer won the doubles’ gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
