Swiss find way to top of orienteering races

Swiss athletes dominated the European Orienteering Championships in Bulgaria, collecting 11 of 24 possible medals for the best results ever.

Simone Niggli comes back home with two gold medals, having won the middle and long distance events. Niggli has now won a medal at every European Championship event.

“The team has many strong performers,” said Niggli, who won four medals in all at the event. “The professional environment with exceptional coaches and the athletes’ commitment to this sport were also factors for success.”

Switzerland’s Daniel Hubmann won the long distance final for the men on Saturday completing the course in 1:44:29.

Fellow countryman Fabian Hertner took third, about four minutes back. That left second to France’s Philippe Adamski, who was just 43 seconds ahead of Hertner. In all, Swiss men won seven medals.

Orienteering races are contests against the clock in which runners try to complete a course set through diverse, typically unfamiliar terrain using a map and compass to navigate between control points.
