Swiss gymnasts take European silver

Switzerland have stunned the gymnastics world after clinching silver in the junior team competition of the 24th European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Greece.

The unexpected win by Niki Böschenstein and Mark Ramseier, both from canton Argau, along with Geneva teammate Patrick Dominquez and Basler Roman Gisi, has propelled Swiss gymnastics into a new realm.

Thursday’s medal win is the first top-ten placing by an under-18 Swiss side at an international competition.

Böschenstein said the win was “unbelievable”.

“We just wanted to reach the top ten, and now we’re in second place – behind the Russians”.

The result has injected fresh steam into Switzerland’s gymnastics fraternity as it builds-up for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
