The unexpected win by Niki Böschenstein and Mark Ramseier, both from canton Argau, along with Geneva teammate Patrick Dominquez and Basler Roman Gisi, has propelled Swiss gymnastics into a new realm.

Thursday's medal win is the first top-ten placing by an under-18 Swiss side at an international competition.

Böschenstein said the win was "unbelievable".

"We just wanted to reach the top ten, and now we're in second place - behind the Russians".

The result has injected fresh steam into Switzerland's gymnastics fraternity as it builds-up for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
