Swiss hotels profited from the warm weather in August, with the number of overnight stays rising to four million. This represents a 3.1 per cent increase over the same month last year.

The Federal Statistical Office in Neuchâtel said on Thursday that the positive result was due not only to the sunny weather, but also to favourable exchange rates and an improvement in value for money.

The Office notes that since the beginning of this year, the number of overnight stays has increased by almost six per cent to 25.51 million.

The most marked increase in overnight stays during August was registered from visitors from the United States.

The Statistical Office said this was due to the strong dollar and the attractions of this year’s Oberammergau Passion play in Germany and the celebrations in Italy for the Holy Year.

There was also an increase of visitors from France, Britain and Japan, although figures for Germany and Italy were down.
