Swiss kidnapped in Mexico

A Swiss expatriate is reported to have been kidnapped in Mexico.

The foreign ministry confirmed that there had been an abduction but gave no details of the case. A report in the French-language magazine, L’Illustré, said that a businessman had been kidnapped and his abductors were demanding a $300,000 (SFr293,000) ransom.

The magazine report said the man had lived in the town of Cuernavaca for the past 20 years.

A foreign ministry spokesman said the Swiss authorities were in regular contact with local officials investigating a case of kidnapping.

Switzerland has also expressed its concern to the Mexican foreign and justice ministries, and sought information from embassies of other countries in Mexico who have dealt with similar cases in the past.

The foreign ministry warns in a travel advisory that “attempts to extort money and abductions are frequent, particularly in the Mexico City district and in the state of Morelos”.
