Switzerland’s ice hockey league says Augsburger is leaving in August after two seasons as its chief executive, and will start his Olympic duties in Russia in September.
Augsburger said in a statement that it was “a great honour” for the Sochi organising committee to have shown such confidence in him.
“As a long-time official in the field of sport, where I’ve taken on different roles, this is a unique opportunity, comparable to a Swiss hockey player being offered the chance to play for the National Hockey League,” he said.
A previous head of the Swiss Olympic Association, he has also been the Swiss team’s head of mission at three Olympic Games.
