Swiss pavilion at Expo 2008 hailed success

The foreign ministry says the Swiss pavilion at World Exhibition in northern Spain has proved to be a success.

The Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, which featured the theme of water and sustainable development, ran for three months before it closed its doors on Sunday.

At least 390,000 mainly Spanish visitors were attracted by the Swiss pavilion, which included a giant sail and presentations on hydrology and pollution, according to the ministry’s promotion agency, Presence Switzerland.

The government provided SFr3 million ($ 2.7 million) for the Swiss participation in the World Exhibition.

An estimated 5.6 million people visited the fair, which is below expectations.

The next World Exhibition is due to take place in the Chinese city of Shanghai in 2010.
