Swiss women knocked out by Williams sisters

Switzerland’s two best women tennis players have both been knocked out of singles in the Italian Open, each of them by one of the Williams sisters.

Timea Bacsinszky, currently ranked 48th in the world, at one point led the world number one, Serena Williams, 4-1 in the first set, and later had three set points against the American.

But she lost the tiebreaker, and from then on Serena dominated the match, winning 7-6 (2), 6-1.

Venus Williams, the world number four, had an easier time disposing of the other Swiss contender, Patty Schnyder, who is ranked 45th. The score was 6-2, 6-2.

Last year’s winner, Dinara Safina, who is recovering from a back injury, is out of the tournament, beaten by Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
