Swiss women volleyballers fail to make home advantage count

Switzerland's Lea Schwer smashes the ball towards the Hungarian side during the European Championships qualifyer Keystone

Switzerland's women have suffered another setback to their hopes of qualifying for next year's European volleyball championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. They lost 3-0 to Hungary in their third group match in Montreux.

The latest defeat came hot on the heels of their 3-0 loss to Belgium. Switzerland opened the three-day tournament with a 3-0 win over Portugal.

Dusan Jarotta’s team is currently in third place with two points from three games. They will be looking to make up ground on leaders, Hungary (six points), when they travel to Belgium in June 2001 for the return group matches.

The winner of the group will qualify for the finals in Sofia in September next year. The second-placed team will get another chance of qualifying in a playoff round.
