Switzerland face tough Euro football challenge

Switzerland face a tough qualifying round for the Euro 2012 football championships, having been drawn in the same group as England.

The draw, made in Warsaw on Sunday, put Switzerland in Group G, where the other teams are Bulgaria, Montenegro and Wales.

Although on paper Bulgaria is slightly weaker than Switzerland, the Swiss only managed a draw against them in Geneva last year.

Montenegro and Wales are regarded as outsiders in the group.

The host nations, Poland and Ukraine, qualify automatically for the finals. The winner of each of each of the nine groups will go through, as will the best qualified second-placed team. The remaining eight second-placed teams will go into a play-off for the other four places.

The qualifying matches start in September, and the play-offs will take place in November 2011.

The last European championships in 2008 were co-hosted by Switzerland and Austria. Switzerland was eliminated in the first round.

However, Switzerland has qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
