The veteran Swiss politician, Franco Cavalli, is to be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Managua in Nicaragua for his work in supporting healthcare in the Central American nation.

Cavalli, who leads the Social Democratic party in the Swiss federal parliament, will receive the title at a ceremony on Monday.

For the past 15 years, Cavalli, a trained doctor as well as one of Switzerland’s longest-serving politicians, has been in charge of a hospital development project for children in Nicaragua.

The hospital has become an “example across central America for the treatment of tumours and blood-related illnesses”, according to a Social Democratic party press release.

Next week, Cavalli will also be honoured for his work in the field of lymphatic cancer. The faculty of medicine at the University of Omaha in Nebraska will award him the prestigious Waldman Prize in the United States next Friday.
