Tour of Italy cycling race still wide open

The Tour of Italy cycling race is still wide open at the start of the third stage. Following the prologue and the first two stages, the race has had a different leader every day so far.

The current holder of the leader’s pink jersey is Monday’s winner, Italy’s Cristian Moreni.

Moreni led the 232km stage from Terracina to Maddaloni for about two-thirds of the way, pulling away to sprint to his first ever stage victory six kilometres from the end.

The cycling was hampered by torrential rainfall on and off throughout the stage, which made the roads very slippery and led to many falls. No-one was seriously injured.

For the two remaining Swiss racers, the day was uneventful. Daniel Schnider finished in 22nd place, while Niki Aebersold ended last. They are currently 38th and 39th in the overall ranking respectively.

Tuesday’s 177km stage leads from Paestum to Scalea.
