Ullrich defends yellow jersey in Ticino stage

Germany's Jan Ullrich has successfully defended his lead in the Tour de Suisse, Switzerland's biggest cycling race. He finished the seventh stage with the pack, 26 seconds behind the winner, Marco Fincato of Italy.

Fincato completed the 171km stage from Locarno to Lugano, in Switzerland's Italian-speaking region, in just over three hours and 58 minutes. He pulled ahead in a sprint finish, coming in ahead of a fellow Italian, Salvatore Commeso in second and the Dutch rider, Marteen Den Bakker in third place.

The best placed Swiss cyclists were Mauro Gianetti and Fabian Jeker, who finished sixth and seventh respectively.
